Protect Your Lawn from Grubs, Fungal Disease & Weeds

Your lawn may look healthy today, but pests, fungus, and weeds can strike fast. Learn how to spot early signs, apply the right treatments, and keep your turf thriving year-round.

Common Lawn Grubs in Queensland

Lawn grubs

(also called beetle larvae or armyworms) are one of the most common threats to healthy turf in South East QLD — especially in warmer months.

Signs of Lawn Grub Damage:

  • Brown or dead patches appearing overnight
  • Turf feels spongy or lifts easily from the soil
  • Increased bird activity picking at the lawn
  • Visible white curl grubs or green caterpillars underneath the surface

When They're Active:

  • Mostly in summer and autumn, but can appear anytime after rain and heat
  • More common in Sir Walter Buffalo and Palmetto, but all grasses are at risk

How to Treat:

  • Apply Grub & Insect Control Treatment in the late afternoon or early evening
  • Water in thoroughly
  • Repeat after 2–3 weeks if activity continues
  • Follow up with fertiliser to help the lawn recover

Lawn Fungal Diseases

Fungal problems thrive in humid, damp conditions — especially when the lawn is overwatered, underfed, or shaded.

Common Types:

  • Brown Patch: Circular patches with a brown outer ring
  • Dollar Spot: Small round spots, often on short-mown lawns
  • Pythium (Grease Spot): Greasy, blackened patches, common in overwatered lawns

Signs to Watch For:

  • Discoloured circles, greasy areas, or webbing
  • Appears during wet weather, poor drainage, or compacted soil
  • Common in Empire Zoysia and Wintergreen Couch

How to Treat:

  • Improve drainage and avoid overwatering
  • Aerate compacted areas
  • Apply a lawn fungicide (available via special order or partner stockists)
  • Top dress with quality soil to boost microbial activity

Weed Invasion

Weeds compete with your turf for light, nutrients, and water. Some — like bindii or nutgrass — can quickly take over if not treated early.

Common Lawn Weeds in SE QLD:

Weed When It Appears How to Control It
Bindii Autumn–Winter Apply broadleaf weed killer in early winter
Clover Autumn–Spring Spot spray with selective herbicide
Nutgrass Summer–Autumn Use specialised nutgrass killer
Winter Grass Winter Pre-emergent herbicide in late autumn
Creeping Oxalis All year Targeted broadleaf treatment

Weed Control Tips:

  • Mow regularly — don’t let weeds flower and seed
  • Use pre-emergents to stop new weeds before they start
  • Apply a selective herbicide that won’t damage your turf type
  • Fertilise regularly to create a dense lawn that outcompetes weeds

Weed & Pest Tips by Turf Type:

Turf Type Weed Risk Pest Risk Recommended Action
Sir Walter Buffalo Low Moderate Spot spray weeds, apply grub control in summer
Palmetto Buffalo Low–Moderate High Watch for lawn grubs after rain
Empire Zoysia Low Low Treat fungus in shaded areas
Wintergreen Couch High High Frequent mowing and weed pre-emergents
