Queensland’s subtropical weather means your lawn goes through growth surges, dormant phases, and pest-prone periods — especially if you're in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, or Woodford. Each turf type (like Sir Walter Buffalo or Empire Zoysia) has slightly different needs, but they all benefit from seasonal care.

This guide helps you stay ahead of problems and maintain a thick, green, low-maintenance lawn.

Summer (Dec–Feb):
Growth + Watering

What’s Happening:
Warm days and summer rain trigger rapid turf growth — but also invite pests, fungal diseases, and weeds if your lawn isn’t managed properly.

Lawn Care Tips:

  • Maintain vibrant colour and thick coverage
  • Avoid weeds, grubs, and fungal issues
  • Choose the right care for your specific turf type

Autumn (Mar–May):
Repair & Prepare for Dormancy

What’s Happening:
Growth slows down and days get shorter. Autumn is ideal for lawn renovation and prepping for winter.

Lawn Care Tips:

  • Mowing: Every 2–3 weeks
  • Watering: Reduce frequency as temps drop
  • Fertilising: Apply autumn fertiliser in March or early April
  • Aeration & Top Dressing: Ideal time to aerate and repair compacted areas
  • Weed Prevention: Apply pre-emergent herbicide for winter weeds

What’s Happening:
Growth slows significantly, and turf may lose some colour. However, with proper care, you can keep your lawn looking great.

Lawn Care Tips:

  • Mowing: Only as needed (every 3–4 weeks)
  • Watering: 1x per week or only during dry spells
  • Fertilising: Apply a winter fertiliser in late May or early June
  • Pest Watch: Monitor for lawn grubs and fungal spots
  • Shade Management: Prune trees and remove leaf litter to allow more sun

  • De-thatching & Aeration: Great time to remove dead thatch and open up the soil
